media: A crash Course
MEdia is a journey about girls being represented in the media.
Earning the Journey awards
Every Girl Scout journey has three sub-awards. Each of these have different criteria. Below are some ideas and suggestions.
Monitor
- Keep a notebook with you throughout the day. Write down when you see an ad or some form of media that actually resembles your life.
- Go online and find at least five advertisements that caused a scandal. Why?
- Look at stereotypes for girls of your age group, cultural background, and girls in general. Are any of these stereotypes actually accurate?
Influence (Ideas for your project)
- Unrealistic models in fashions spreads targeted at your age group
- Unrealistic societal expectations concerning your appearance
- Unfair representation of people like you in the media.
Cultivate
- Write and call T.V. show producers and talk to them about your concerns
- Use a blog to cultivate yours and others awareness of the media
- Create a petition/boycott stores that promote unhealthy body expectations.

Field Day is a badge for learning how to organize a field day. Ideas include:
- Get someone (who isn't on a team) to be the field day photographer. Have them run around and take pictures.
- Mimic the Olympics with opening ceremonies and the presentation of each team.
- Play Calvinball (Calvinball is a sport from the Calvin and Hobbes-by Bill Watterson-comics), in which the teams make up their own often ridiculous rules as the game progresses.
- Create a persona who would buy your invention.
- Design an entire line of products that your business would produce
- Actually create a prototype of your invention.
- If you are really enjoying this, why not make your business a reality?
- Create an "online presence" by creating at least two social media accounts, one of which is some kind of blog.
- Create a "pre-posting" checklist and use it.
- Find three news stories of huge social media mishaps. How can you avoid this? Is there any sure way? Should you maybe rethink your profile?
