Get moving: a crash course
This journey is all about investigating the energy around you. You will learn about the energy in your daily life and how it affects you. You will also explore how energy is used to help you get from one place to another.
earning the journey awards
Every Girl Scout Journey has three sub-awards. Each of these have different criteria. Below are some ideas and suggestions.
the energy inside of you
- Talk about how nutrition affects your energy level and have a healthy snack. Do an experiment with your girls and have them eat a sugary breakfast (donut) one day and a healthy breakfast (eggs, fruit) another day and have them chart their energy levels. Did you feel different when you ate the healthy breakfast vs. the sugary breakfast? How soon did you get hungry again? Protein will help keep you feel energized longer while sugar will give you a burst of energy, then you'll crash.
- Have a dance party to show how much energy it takes to be active.
the energy around you
- Visit a power plant and learn about how energy is generated. Have your girls think about how much energy they use each day--shower, TV, cooking.
- Brainstorm ways you can conserve energy. Compare how much energy we use in the United States to how much energy is used in other countries. Do we use more or less?
- Meet with a representative of the Bedford 20/20 coalition. This group has committed to reducing Bedford's energy consumption by 20% by the year 2020. Have them explain their plan on how to do this.
- Meet with a company that does energy audits of residential and commercial buildings. Learn what techniques they recommend to reduce energy use.
the energy to get from place to place
- Go to a car dealership and have the owner talk to your girls about the difference between hybrid cars, electric cars, and gas powered cars.
- Talk about carpooling vs. driving solo and talk about how much energy you'll save.
- Use your own energy to go on a group bike ride or a hike.
- Badge idea--Make recycled paper
