Brownie quest: A crash Course
Brownie Quest is an "it's your world-change it!" journey. Its purpose is to teach Brownie Girl Scouts how to become leaders in their community and the world.
Earning the journey awards
The Journey awards come in the forms of three "keys" that "unlock" leadership.
The first key
- Go around the circle. Every girl must say a quality she values about herself.
- A sheet of paper is taped to everyone's back, and everyone is given a marker. Go around writing (anonymous) notes about the things you value about that person.
- Have the Brownies create a skit about the things they each value that can be found in the girl scout law.
The second key
- Make a "Troop Fun Jar". Have each member of the troop write down a fun activity to do as a troop on a slip of paper. Put the papers in the jar, and when you have a spare fifteen minutes in the meeting, choose a piece of paper.
- Make one (or more) of the recipes mentioned in the Journey book (or find a different, healthy recipe on the internet) as a troop. Enjoy.
The third key
- Decide, as a troop, something around your neighborhood that needs changing. Brainstorm who has the power to change it. Write letters.
- Organize among several troops a neighborhood clean-up.
Corresponding Badges
Brownie Quest is an "It's Your World" journey. The corresponding badge categories are Digital Arts, Healthy Living, Performance, Science and Technology, and Storytelling. Respectively, the Brownie level badges in these categories are Computer Expert, My Best Self, Dancer, Home Scientist, and My Family Story.
Computer Expert is a badge designed to develop computer skills. Ideas include:
• Use Photoshop or iPhoto to edit some troop photos.
• Use a building program (like Google Sketchup) to create something.
• Create a work of digital art! Print it out and frame it.
My Best Self is a badge devoted to staying healthy. Ideas include:
• Using paper plates, have the girls paint/draw/glitter-glue the food portion plate (the latest version of the food pyramid). Encourage them to take it home and hang it up in their kitchen or dining room.
• As a troop, play and active game, such as tag.
• Make mini-first aid kits, each containing a band-aid, mini-gauze pad, alcohol sterilizing wipe, and a small piece of candy.
Dancer is a badge for learning about dancing. Ideas include:

Dancer is a badge for learning about dancing. Ideas include:
- Do a dance from a far-away country.
- Learn a dance that tells a story.
- Host the Sock-Hop!
- Play with surface tension--use a water dropper to drop water onto a penny. Watch as it domes.
- Make slime. Mix 2 cups of warm water, 1 of cup white craft glue, food coloring, and 2 teaspoons of Borax.
- Cover a speaker with plastic wrap. Turn on the music and put your slime (see above) on the plastic wrap. It will dance.
- Have each girl come to the meeting with a story about their family.
- Have each girl make snacks traditional to the country(ies) that their family is from. Have a tasting.
- Get a baby picture of each girl. Try to match the Brownie to her infant self.
