5 Flowers, 4 stories, 3 cheers for animals!: a crash course
This journey is a Daisy leadership journey all about animals. In this journey Daisies learn responsibility for animals, which enables responsibility for themselves. They can find themselves through this journey with songs, games, drawings, and so much more!
earning the journey awards
Every Girl Scout Journey has three sub-awards. Each of these have different criteria. Below are some ideas and suggestions.
all about animals
- Have each girl bring in a picture of their favorite animal and have them say why it's their favorite animal.
- Make a poster board of all of the animals in a habitat together.
- Visit your local veterinary center and have a tour/invite an animal specialist or veterinarian to come to a meeting and talk with your girls.
- Visit a zoo.
- Have each girl describe her family pet and what's required to take care of it.
- Invite a speaker from The Guiding Eyes For the Blind to come and talk to your girls or visit the training center/office.
- Visit Westmorland Sanctuary and learn about birds.
- Visit the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem.
Take action--The red robin project
- Organize a supply donation bin for The Guiding Eyes For the Blind or your local ASPCA. Invite your school or community to donate, collars, leashes, food, etc.
- Have each girl bring in an old dish and use them to build a bird bath (you can use a cheap bowl for the top). You can make beautiful glass birdbaths from a clear vase (the base) glued to a clear or cut glass bowl (the bath basin). Use clear epoxy glue to attach the two pieces and let dry. Inexpensive glass bowls and vases can be purchased at TJ Maxx. Then donate the birdbath to your school garden or enjoy it in your own backyard.
About me
- Use troop funds to buy decorative bird nests at Michael's. Have each girl bring in some small items or photos that are meaningful to them and glue it into the nest. Present them to eachother and talk about your "nest" and the important things in it, that are a part of you.
- Make animal masks out of paper plates. Use them to act out a puppet show.
- Get an origami book and lead your troop on paper folding. Make mobiles from your animal creations.
- Do the animal yoga on pg. 50 of the girls guide to this journey.
